In RIPLinux, the boot scripts pop up a text-mode dialog: "If you don't have a US keyboard, select Yes and choose a keymap." The next dialog presented a list of keymaps that you could scroll through. The story will be similar for users of other non-QWERTY layouts. This is the case for me and my Dvorak keyboard layout, where that comes out as "vdtnsaoh]eee". However, the bootloader normally comes up with a US-English mapping active, so if you need to set a layout that differs from that significantly, just typing "keyboard=." can be a challenge.
